What is GlassBox?

GlassBox is the revolutionary simulation technology behind SimCity. It gives you the power to impact individual Sims lives, manage city-level simulation, and balance multiple cities at once. All of this is done through a unique graphic interface, which replaces charts and numbers with the experience of actually manipulating the city itself and seeing how it responds in real time. Now you can physically move buildings and install services and industries into your city, then watch as the city itself gives you visual feedback. Manipulate water, power, traffic, pollution, unemployment, and more. Using the tactile GlassBox interface, epic city planning has never been easier or more fun!

The Economic Loop

The GlassBox engine behind SimCity achieves its unique gameplay experience through units of information called agents. Agents travel along pathways defined by the roads in your city. They may represent units of power, goods, the signals of a fire alarm, or even the Sims themselves! Each agent has a purpose in the simulation just as they would in an actual city. A Sims objective may be to go to work, whereas the purpose of a unit of power may be to turn on the lights for a residential block. Each choice you make enables, hinders, or changes these agents and affects the overall destiny of your city!

Data Visualisation Layers

Most of the clues to your performance as mayor of SimCity come from the look of the buildings and the behavior of your Sims. However, through data visualization layers, you can also look behind the scenes for deeper clues about how your city is functioning. See how much power is traveling through the wires, or water through the pipes under your streets. You can even look at the terrain under your city to discover coal deposits that may be useful to your citizens or possible pollution. The data visualization layers allow you to see and control every aspect of your city!

Creation and Spread of Fire

Sometimes disaster can strike your city! Fires may start in homes abandoned due to poverty, or they may be started by a crazed arsonist. Fire in the GlassBox simulation is manifested in a very realistic way. Radiant “heat” may cause nearby structures to smoke and burn, depending on their building materials. Sometimes those structures can even explode! Sims will run from burning buildings, but some may not get out in time and will have to be rushed to the hospital. Good thing you have a fire department. As the alarms go off, they will rush to the scene and hopefully keep your city from going up in smoke!
